Last day of my year at home with Grace. Well, I don’t have a job yet, so I guess I’ll be home with her next week, but Andrea will be here too. It has been a great year.

No tears were shed this morning, by Grace or us! We dropped her off for her first day of day care. She’ll be attending two days a week to give Andrea some time over the winter to write her thesis. I think we prepared our monkey really well. We introduced her to the head teacher and without missing a beat she said “Hi, Mrs. Penner!” I think she was in awe of all the cool stuff to play with. When we left, all the little girls were trundling off towards the gym. Grace gave us hugs, but was too focused on where she was going to look back as she went out the door with the group.

We are home for two weeks and then Andi and Grace are off to BC to visit Grammie and Grandpa at Sheridan Lake and then the gang in Chilliwack. This will be the first time we’ve had to pay for a flight for Grace.

We are back from the cottage. We had a great time on the lake, although we could have done with a little less rain. Grace had many firsts this past week, including the first time on a kayak, a motor boat and in a ‘big girl’ bed. The bed thing was actually a good test run to see if she is ready for a big girl bed at home. She isn’t. 😉

You know I’m losing the logic battle when I have to utter the words… “No, you can’t go fly a kite in your pajamas.” Sometimes I forget I’m talking to a 2 year old and the conversations make complete sense to her. 😉

I’m curious how long it is going to take for Grace to deplete the pile of scrap paper that Andrea has built up over 12 years of school. At the rate Grace is coloring and painting, I give the pile another year or so.

I think colors are starting to click in for Grace. She’s been able to match colors for a while but pointing out specific colors, even if we named the color was difficult for her. This morning, without any prompting from me, Grace started correctly pointing out different colors on her cup.

Not sure who the parent is these days. Yesterday at the grocery store, I put a pen in my mouth while juggling soup cans and my list. Grace sees this and says “Daddy, don’t eat the pen.”

Not sure if I’m getting lazy, over-confident or my sub-conscious is starting to trust Grace’s eating skills, but we got half way through breakfast this morning before I noticed Grace didn’t have a bib on (or any drips). I decided to press my luck and not bother putting a bib on her, and she finished breakfast without the need for a shirt change!

We’ve been working on names lately. Grace now knows my name and Andi’s name and knows what our last names are all the same. She knows her name is “Gracie Barbara Beck”, although for some reason she adds in a second Barbara sometimes.

This afternoon in the car we were going over names again and we asked her who she was named after. After some careful thought, she correctly said “Grammie”. We haven’t really talked about that aspect much so I was surprised she got it. I decided to push on a bit and asked “If you are named after Grammie, then what is Grammie’s name?” She thought for a good ten seconds and then said “Gracie Barbara Beck” with a tone of accomplishment. At least she understands “same” now. I corrected her and told her only the Barbara part was after Grammie. Then Andrea said “Grammie’s name is Barbara Rozynski.” With a hint of being a bit overwhelmed, Grace replied simply, “Oh.”
